Discover San Francisco: 10 Must-See Places in the City by the Bay

San Francisco, renowned for its eclectic neighborhoods, iconic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene, offers a wealth of experiences for visitors. Whether you’re exploring its historic streets, enjoying panoramic views, or indulging in its culinary delights, here are ten must-see places that capture the essence of this captivating city:

Exploring San Francisco’s Iconic Landmarks

1. Golden Gate Bridge

One of my favorite moments during my visit to California was standing at the edge of Crissy Field, looking up at the majestic Golden Gate Bridge as it disappeared into the fog. Whether you’re walking, biking, or driving across it, there’s something magical about this iconic suspension bridge that connects you to the heart of San Francisco. For the best views, head to Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point or Battery Spencer—you won’t regret it. If you’re visiting California for the first time, this landmark should be at the very top of your list.

2. Alcatraz Island

Step back in time with a visit to Alcatraz Island, home to the notorious former federal prison. Take a ferry ride to the island and explore the cell blocks, hear captivating stories on the audio tour, and enjoy panoramic views of San Francisco from the Rock.

Although I could not muster the guts to visit this place up close, I sure have heard quite a lot of horror stories.

3. Fisherman’s Wharf

A bustling waterfront area, Fisherman’s Wharf is a hub of activity with its seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and attractions like Pier 39. Watch sea lions basking in the sun, enjoy street performances, and sample fresh clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls.

The clam chowder is absolutely amazing and I happened to enjoy it during a cold night making it all the more comforting.

4. Chinatown

Immerse yourself in the vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors of one of the oldest and largest Chinatowns outside Asia. Explore colorful alleys, visit temples and markets, and savor authentic Chinese cuisine at local eateries.

5. Golden Gate Park

One of the largest urban parks in the U.S., Golden Gate Park is a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle. While you visit California, don’t miss this lush oasis filled with museums, gardens, and recreation. During my own visit, I especially enjoyed the San Francisco Botanical Garden, where over 8,000 plant species from around the world are beautifully displayed. Admission is $13 for adults, with discounts available for residents, seniors, and children

You can learn more about the park or plan your visit on their official website.

or check out more top spots in our Planning Your Visit section.

Highlights of the park also include the California Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Garden, and peaceful moments paddling on Stow Lake.

6.Lombard Street

This has to be my favorite places in the whole of SFO.

Known as the “Crookedest Street in the World,” Lombard Street features a steep, winding section with eight hairpin turns. Walk down or drive slowly through this picturesque street lined with blooming flowers and scenic views of the city. It is a small drive or walk but is just picturesque or I must say Insta Worthy.

7. Coit Tower

Perched atop Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower offers panoramic views of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Admire its distinctive Art Deco architecture, murals depicting California scenes inside, and the surrounding Pioneer Park’s lush gardens.

8.Palace of Fine Arts

A remnant from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts is a stunning architectural gem with a Greco-Roman rotunda and tranquil lagoon. Stroll around the grounds, admire the swans, and capture memorable photos.

9. Mission District

Experience San Francisco’s bohemian spirit in the Mission District, known for its colorful murals, trendy boutiques, and diverse culinary scene. Don’t miss the vibrant street art along Clarion Alley and delicious tacos from local taquerias.

10. Haight-Ashbury

A historic neighborhood synonymous with the 1960s counterculture movement, Haight-Ashbury remains a cultural hub with vintage shops, eclectic cafes, and Victorian architecture. Explore its hippie roots and vibrant street life.
