Being a surfer, I spend way too much time (but never enough) chasing waves on North Shore Oahu beaches. These Oahu beaches offer hidden gems and epic adventures for every kind of explorer. The following 9 North Shore Oahu beaches are some of my favorite beaches ever:
1. Haleiwa Beach
Haleiwa is a beach town with a population of about 5,000 people. This beach town has some of the most laid-back Oahu beaches. The best part is that there are a total of three beaches here: the main beach, Haleiwa Ali’i Beach, and Haleiwa Beach Park.
The main beach not only offers amazing mountain views but also the chance to spot a honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle). The Haleiwa Ali’i Beach is a bit smaller, but it offers everything you need: restrooms, showers, and a giant parking lot right on the sand. Haleiwa Beach Park on the harbor side has a bus stop, showers, and ample parking. Overall, these three beaches offer endless chill and are a must-visit spot for anybody who wants to detox and rest.
2. Shark’s Cove
Shark’s Cove is one of the best beaches in Oahu for snorkeling. It has vibrant fish, turtles, and other marine life. The real stars here, however, are the tide pools that are bursting with colorful creatures waiting to be discovered. Just remember to carry good water shoes because volcanic rocks can be a little tricky on bare feet.
As for the namesake sharks, these black-tip reef sharks are more curious than scary. They’re shy and typically harmless to humans. Spotting one is a rare treat. The summer months offer the calmest waters for snorkeling, so plan your visit accordingly.
3. Ka’ena Point
Are you craving a scenic escape? Ka’ena Point isn’t your typical beach walk because the only way you can reach here is by hiking. However, this 5-6 mile adventure is surprisingly flat which makes it perfect for a family outing.
The real magic unfolds at sunset – Ka’ena Point is one of the best Oahu beaches for watching and enjoying a sunset. Insider tip: pack a headlamp! Walking back in the dark is an adventure, but the trade-off is totally worth it. This beach is also a wildlife sanctuary, which means that you’ll have the opportunity to spot animals like humpback whales, Hawaiian monk seals, albatross, etc.
4. Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach isn’t just about the epic sunsets (although, trust me, they’re legendary). This is one of those Oahu beaches that have an endless stretch of soft, white sand. Walking on this sand almost feels like walking on powdered sugar. This beach offers public restrooms and showers nearby, along with convenient parking, a bus stop, and tempting food trucks.
Picture this: you’ve spent the morning battling the waves (or perfecting your tan), and by afternoon, you’re sinking your toes into this luxurious sand, the sun warming your back. Isn’t that pure bliss?

5. Laniakea Beach
Laniakea Beach is also known as the turtle beach. My favorite things to do here are snorkeling and taking a stroll along the shore. A lot of surfers also come to this beach, so if that is something that interests you, then you should definitely grab your surfboard (or a mai tai) and head to this beautiful north shore beach.
The real celebrities of this beach are the green sea turtles and you can spot them from 11 am to 3 pm. This beach has beautiful palm trees and clean turquoise waters and therefore, it is a good place to stop by. Although, be sure to maintain a safe distance from the turtles because you can be fined a hefty sum for touching them.
6. Waimea Beach
This is one of those Oahu beaches you can visit anytime throughout the year. In summer, this beach transforms into a sunbather’s paradise. The famous jumping rock is a perfect spot for all adventurous souls and the calm waves are perfect for a refreshing dip.
During winters, this beach transforms into a surfer’s best dream. The legendary waves during this season go as high as 40 feet. The parking here is a bit scarce so make sure to arrive a little early.
7. Aweoweo Beach
Aweoweo Beach Park is a haven for families seeking a relaxed North Shore experience. This quiet beach offers everything you need for a perfect day: soft sand for building sandcastles, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and even a drinking fountain. Parking is limited to the street, so come early to snag a spot.
Aweoweo Beach Park might be small, but for a family BBQ or a day of soaking up the sun with your loved ones, it’s perfect. Shade is hard to come by at this Oahu beach, so pack an umbrella or sunshade. The water entry is a bit rocky but quickly clears up for smooth swimming. While there’s no lounging in the shade, the beach park offers a play area to keep the keiki (kids) entertained.
8. Ehukai Beach
Ehukai Beach, also known as Banzai Pipeline, is a global pilgrimage site. From November to February, giant waves transform this beach into a battleground for the world’s best surfers. Witnessing these masters carve down monstrous waves is an experience you won’t forget.
It is important to note that swimming is strictly prohibited when the waves are big. Luckily, there are plenty of public bathrooms and showers nearby, so you can stay comfortable while cheering on the surfers.
9. Malaekahana Beach
Malaekahana Beach is your North Shore escape. This quiet beach offers miles of white sand and a world away from Waikiki’s crowds. This Oahu beach is perfect for families or campers seeking serenity. Great facilities, ample parking, and affordable camping permits make it easy to enjoy. Stock up on supplies in nearby La’ie and get ready to relax.
